Can I link to this site? Do you do link-backs?

You are welcome to link this site from your own site. However, if you are linking to a particular page (that is, other than the index page), you may want to inform us so we can alert you in case we decide to move/remove the linked page.

We will be glad to link back to the referring page in the context our site is being linked to; for example, if you write about your stay at the resort in your blog, we will link back to your site in the form of “Mentioned in” or “Recommended by”.

What’s with the new design? What happened to the old site? Can I still access it?

The present version of this site effectively replaces the old one. We hope it will be more responsive to your needs. We have also seen to it that the new build/design conforms to current Web standards. Needless to say, we hope you like it. ;-o

Due to limited server space, we have removed the old pages, so you will not be able to access them anymore.

What do you mean when you say the site is standards-compliant?

From maccaws.org:

Just as standards exist for almost every kind of [product or service], there exist free and non-proprietary standards for the Web. Web standards help the different parts of the Web (your computer, a Web server, your cell phone) communicate in a way that is understood by the different devices connected to it. Web standards make the Web a place where files can be read by anyone, regardless of what they are using to access the Internet.

This site was built following the published and relevant Web standard specifications. For more details, visit the W3C site.

Do I need to upgrade my browser? How do I do that?

This site uses valid, standards-compliant, device-independent code. Although accessible to any browser or Internet device, it is designed for browsers that support Web standards, and will simply render unstyled content in old browsers like Netscape Navigator 4, which has poor/buggy CSS support.

To view this site as intended, you must be using a browser that supports W3C standards, with JavaScript enabled. Your choice of software may be out of your hands, but if you do have control over what software you are using, please consider upgrading your browser to its latest version. Doing so will improve your Web experience.

The following browsers support Web standards, including XHTML, CSS, and the DOM (a universal means of controlling the behavior of Web pages):

Note: This is not an exhaustive listing of browsers that support Web standards, nor an endorsement of browser compliance or of their manufacturers.

I got a “Page not found” message when accessing a page. Why?

A “Page not found” message (Error 404) means that the page you requested (either by clicking on a link within or outside this site, or by typing in a URL) can not be found on the server. The reason may be that said page has been removed, or moved to a new location, or you may have typed the address incorrectly.

If you received this error from clicking on a link on this site, you may want to contact us so we can address the problem.
Ξ Back to the list

I got an “Access forbidden” message when accessing a section of this site. Why?

An “Access forbidden” message (Error 403) means that you do not have permission to directly access that section of the site, or no start page has been specified for that directory, or indexing for that directory has been disabled.

If you received this error from clicking on a link on this site, you may want to contact us so we can address the problem.
Ξ Back to the list

I got an “Unauthorized access” message when accessing a page/directory. Why?

An “Unauthorized access” message (Error 401) means that the requested section is not meant for public access and requires user authentication (read: password) which has yet to be provided, or which has been provided but failed the authorization test.

If you received this error from clicking on a link on this site, you may want to contact us so we can address the problem.
Ξ Back to the list

I got a “Bad request” message when accessing a page. Why?

A “Bad request” message (Error 400) suggests that the data stream sent by the client (no, not you — your browser!) was ‘malformed’, and/or the server was unable to understand the request and process it. It almost always means bad programming of the client system and/or the server.

Simply put, it’s not your fault. A technical error occurred in the way your computer communicated with our server. Try hitting Refresh or Reload on your browser.

If you received this error from clicking on a link on this site, you may want to contact us so we can address the problem.
Ξ Back to the list

I got an “Internal server error” message when accessing a page. Why?

An “Internal server error” message (Error 500) basically means that something has gone wrong, but the server can not be more specific about the error condition. It is likely that a server configuration change, CGI script, or other server-side application has triggered the error.

If you received this error from clicking on a link on this site, you may want to contact us so we can address the problem.
Ξ Back to the list

I clicked on a link somewhere on this site and I was brought here instead. Why is that?

This means that the link you clicked on required JavaScript to work, and you have scripting turned off in your browser or blocked by another application (like a firewall program). You must enable scripting, click on your browser’s ‘Back’ button, and refresh or reload the page.
Ξ Back to the list

Sometimes a link to the weather page is there; sometimes it’s not. Why?

When no current weather conditions are available, the server does not output a link to the weather page.

Nobody answers my messages! Why?

If you sent the email using our contact form, you should receive a server-generated response at the address you provided. If you did not get one, you may have mistyped your email address. You will have to send the form again using a valid email address.

You can also write us at websupport@whaleofadive.com using your own mail client.

What is an RSS feed and how do I use it?

RSS, which stands for ‘Rich Site Syndication’ (also ‘Really Simple Syndication’), allows you to identify Web content you want and delivers it to you. Once you subscribe to a site’s feed, you will be automatically updated whenever new content is posted.

To do this, you need a news reader. Some news readers are accessed using a browser, while some are downloadable applications. All allow you to display and subscribe to the feeds you want. The more popular:
